We’re very excited to announce that this year we will be hosting Granny Square Day 2018!
Granny Square Day is an international online celebration on Instagram, which began back in 2014 by Susan Regalia (@suregal27 on Instagram). Susan told us, ” I had just learned to crochet and was enamoured with the cheerful little granny square, and the idea of having a Grannysquare Day was born.”
Whether you’re new to crochet, or are a seasoned pro, it couldn’t be easier to get involved! The rules for Grannysquare Day are simple: on Wednesday 15th August, take a photo of a granny square (a 4-round traditional granny works best but feel free to be as creative as you want) and crop it so that the single square fills the entire screen of your post. Be sure to include the hashtag #grannysquareday2018 in your post, so that everyone can see all the different types of squares!
One of the best things about Granny Square Day is that when you search by the hashtag, all of the squares will fit together like a virtual granny square blanket! In previous years Sandra Eng (@mobiusgirl on Instagram) has assembled the squares together to create some gorgeous images. We’ve got some exciting plans to continue this idea of making collages from your squares, which we’ll reveal after the event.
So come on, get out your hooks and wool and join in the fun! There’s so many fabulous reasons to get involved – seeing all the different squares is a great source of inspiration, it’s a brilliant community project and a fantastic way to make new online friends, plus it’s an excuse to do a bit of quick and easy crochet (not that we need any excuses!).
