Emma Walker, our lovely model from issue 46, is a Simply Crochet subscriber, so we wanted to find out more about her crochet passion…
Can you tell us about when you started crocheting and how you got hooked?
“I learnt to crochet five years ago while I was working as a film extra at Shepperton Film Studios. There’s a lot of hanging around on set and I befriended a woman who was making granny squares! I bought a beginners book and never looked back! I always wanted to give it a go. My Great Grandmother Flo crocheted and as my Nan is a knitter, she passed down to me all of Flo’s vintage crochet hooks. Maybe it’s genetic!”
What kind of things do you like to stitch?
“From baby booties to blankets, tops to animals. I have enjoyed everything I’ve made. I have a preference to chunkier stitches and patterns with great textures. Last year I made a deer and a frog and I love the way they come to life from a bundle of body parts! Fine lace work is probably my least favourite but it always looks fabulous.”
Do you have a favourite make?
“I made crocheted lavender wedding favours for all the ladies at my cousin’s wedding last year, which had a vintage theme. It took me months of fine lace work, but the effort was definitely worth it. It’s very satisfying giving something that’s handmade – therefore a lot of my favourite makes have been gifts.”
Do you crochet on the go?
“If I’m making smaller pieces (such as socks or baby items) then it’s the perfect pastime on trains; even if I do get some rather strange looks from fellow commuters! During my six-year professional dance career I spent many hours crocheting back stage, on film sets as well as on the high seas!”
What are your next crochet project goals?
“I have recently learnt to Tunisian Crochet – with the help of your handy supplement magazine! I have made two lovely cushions for our garden steamer chairs. I definitely want to do more it is so simple yet very effective. Although at the moment it’s all about the baby makes for rather a few pregnant friends!”
And what do you think of your Simply Crochet cover?
“Love the cover shot! The whole shoot was a lot of fun and a wonderful team to work with. My perfect day at work!”
