Free puff stitch bauble pattern!

Need a last minute Christmas gift? Or is your tree missing that little something special? Well we’ve got the perfect pattern for you! This free bauble pattern uses puff stitch to create an elegant, irresistible texture. You can make the bauble using any yarn you fancy and on any hook size, but we used a white dk cotton yarn on a 4mm hook (the finished bauble measures approx 22cm around).

YOU WILL NEED

  • A small amount of any dk cotton yarn
  • A 4mm (US G/6) hook
  • A small amount of red ribbon
  • A small amount of toy stuffing

HOW TO MAKE A PUFF STITCH

To make a puff st you simply wrap your yarn around your hook and insert it into the instructed st or space. Then

pull your yarn up through the st or space, leaving 3 loops on your hook. Repeat this process twice more so that you have 7 loops on your hook. Pull your yarn through all 7 loops as you slip them off your hook. Finally, close the puff st with a ch1. That’s all there is to it!

A QUICK NOTE

For the decreasing part of the bauble you’ll need to work some invisible decreases! Invisible decreases (in case you’re unsure) are when you insert your hook through the front loops of the next 2 sts, going in an upwards direction through both loops, then draw your yarn through all the loops on your hook (slipping them off your hook as you go).

Break the yarn – leaving a long tail – but before you close up the top of the bauble, tie your bit of ribbon into a loop (leaving a nice big knot at the end). Push the knot through the hole at the top of your bauble and then weave your tail through the 6 remaining sts and pull tight around the ribbon’s knot. Weave in all the ends and then hang your bauble proudly on your tree (or give it to someone as a gift).
