“The great joy in putting together an event like The Handmade Fair is the people I get to work with. Everyone coming has a story to tell, something to teach, and we can all learn a thing or two. I want to share as much about our experts and the people selling their wares so you too can get as excited about all of this as I am.” Kirstie Allsopp
We talked to Karen Miller from Mrs Moon about what she’s looking forward to most at The Handmade Fair!
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
Susan and I usually pop into the shop at opening time just to say hello to whomever is working that day, check on any stock requirements or issues people may have. We then typically work from home updating the website, writing patterns, designing or filming tutorials. Every day is a little bit different!
Are there any crafts you don’t like, or can’t do?
We’re not that good at sewing (much to our mother’s shame – she is a seamstress). I’ve had the odd attempt at curtains and basic dress making, but am not particularly competent!
Who inspired you to start doing what you do?
Our mum had a fabric and yarn shop in the late 70s. She is expert at all things crafty so a small amount must have rubbed off on us!
What do you love most about working in the craft industry?
We love being able to do something different every day, being creative, working with colour and texture. It’s a real luxury that our work is something we are really passionate about.
What new projects are you currently working on?
I am creating a simple chunky garter stitch child’s jumper pattern using Mrs Moon Plump. Susan is designing a summer crochet jumper pattern using Blue Sky Alpacas’ Worsted Cotton.
What are you looking forward to most about being at The Handmade Fair?
We are looking forward to meeting Kirstie and all the experts and can’t wait to see what all the other exhibitors are up to! Hampton Court is just up the road from us and such a lovely venue – it’s going to be really exciting exhibiting there ourselves.
Tell us a little bit about what you’re doing at the Fair.
We are bringing our own yarn ‘Plump’ along with lots of gorgeous chunky patterns for knitters and crocheters. It comes in 14 shades which we’ve named after our favourite sweet things and is an unbelievably soft mix of superfine Merino and baby alpaca. We’re also bringing lots of learn to knit and crochet kits for those who are just starting out.
